How to Convert HEIC or PDF Files to JPG or PNG

TL;DR

If your image won’t upload to Stemble, it may be saved as an HEIC file from an iPhone or iPad, or as a PDF.

Stemble works best with JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WEBP image files.

To fix it:

  • HEIC file: Convert it to JPG/JPEG or PNG on your phone or computer. On iPhone or iPad, you can also switch your camera format to Most Compatible so future photos save as JPEG.
  • PDF file: Take a clear screenshot of the page you need, or convert the page to JPG/JPEG or PNG.

Once your file is converted, upload the new image to Stemble and you should be good to go.

If your image won’t upload to Stemble, it may be saved as an HEIC or PDF file. Convert it to JPG/JPEG or PNG, then try uploading it again.

Warning: Converting is not the same as renaming. Changing answer.heic to answer.jpg does not convert the file.

If Your File Is HEIC

iPhones and iPads may save photos as HEIC files. You can convert an existing photo or change your camera settings so future photos are saved as JPEG.

Convert an Existing HEIC Photo

On a newer iPhone or iPad:
  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Tap the Actions button next to the file name.
  3. Tap Export.
  4. Choose JPEG or PNG.
  5. Save the converted image, then upload it to Stemble.
On a computer (Mac, Windows, or Linux):
  1. Open the HEIC file in an image app that supports it.
  2. Look for Save As or Export.
  3. Choose JPG/JPEG or PNG.
  4. Save the converted image, then upload it to Stemble.

If your computer can’t open the HEIC file, try converting it on the iPhone or iPad it came from instead.

Save Future iPhone or iPad Photos as JPEG

To prevent this issue with future photos:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Camera → Formats.
  3. Select Most Compatible.

New photos will now be saved as JPEG.

If Your File Is a PDF

If your work is saved as a PDF, the quickest option is usually to take a clear screenshot of the page you need to upload.

  1. Open the PDF and go to the page containing your work.
  2. Make sure your full answer or drawing is visible.
  3. Take a screenshot.
  4. Check that the image is clear and nothing important was cropped out.
  5. Upload the screenshot to Stemble.

You can also export or convert the PDF page to JPG/JPEG or PNG using a trusted PDF or image conversion tool on your device.

Before You Upload

Before submitting your converted image, review the guidance in How to Complete Image Upload Tasks to make sure your work is clear and readable.
